Foundation support helps young athlete compete for Great Britain

Support from the Richardson Brothers Foundation has played an instrumental role in helping Terry Miller, a young athlete from Cornwall, fulfil his dream of representing Great Britain in the sport of Surf Lifesaving.

Surf Lifesaving is a multi-discipline aquatic sport that trains individuals with the skills required to save a life. Lifesaving sport develops and maintains confidence, fitness and the ability to be rescue ready.

Terry first got involved in the sport as a 13 year-old member of Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club, and soon began to focus on the 'surf ski' discipline, which is a performance oriented kayak designed for speed on open water, most commonly the ocean.

In 2022 he was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2022 Lifesaving World Championships in Riccione, Italy, where he placed 6th in the surf ski final, and established himself as the highest ranked Under-18 paddler in Europe at the time.

The following year Terry became European Junior Champion and in 2024 he won the bronze medal at the Surf Ski World Championships in Madeira, one of only three medals gained by British athletes at the competition.

His coach, Scott Wood, describes Terry as:

'The future of surf ski paddling for Great Britain' and as

'a perfect example of a modern sportsperson - focussed, intelligent and driven to succeed at everything he does.'

Thanking the Foundation for its support Terry said:

'Training involves much mileage around Cornwall, while competing both nationally and internationally involves entry fees as well as more travel and accommodation.

Without this support from the Richardson Brothers Foundation I would be unable to train and compete and without taking part in these competitions there is simply no hope of success.'

We look forward to continuing to follow Terry progress and results as he competes in 2025 and beyond.
