Each year, Army Reservists complete a 15 day ‘camp’ as part of their skills development, training, and qualification for their annual bounty payment; Army Reserve Musicians are no different.

On 3rd August, the Band of the Mercian Regiment deployed to Cosford for the first part of the annual training exercise. After unloading the kit and setting up their new band room, rehearsals began in earnest in preparation for two high profile engagements.

This was followed by professional development discussions for those undertaking the Army’s career employment qualifications and time for individual practice to get to grips with some new music.

On the 5th August, the Pop Group spent time rehearsing their sets ready for a trip abroad supporting the regiment next month, while other members of the band focused on individual practice. Those preparing for CEQ exams accessed music theory lessons, aural training, and support on performance technique from their mentors.

Then on the 8th August, the Band of the Mercian Regiment presented a spectacular musical performance in the glorious surroundings of St Chad’s in the centre of Shrewsbury.

Music included traditional waltzes, marches and an overture, to a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne (and all genres in between) - there was something to delight everyone.   On what would have been the opening night of the Shrewsbury Flower Show, the Band were thrilled to bring the joys of Military Band music to the heart of Shrewsbury in such a spectacular setting.

Musicians on their Annual Training Exercise like to work hard and play hard. The daytime training can be challenging and demands full focus and concentration, and to counteract this they enjoy making the most of any downtime that comes their way.

Members of the band attended a local pub quiz, a BBQ and ‘Taskmaster’ night, Telford Parkrun, a formal dinner night, and for some, a canoeing adventure and a trip to Cosford’s RAF Museum.

Training on the 11th August focused mainly around individuals, with music theory support in preparation for the General Musicianship assessments, 1:1 sessions with mentors, and personal practice.

The Saxophone Quartet took the time to rehearse together for some upcoming gigs, and the Pop Band spent the afternoon finalising their set list for their upcoming engagements in Croatia.

There was also a session in the morning with the Battalion Career Management Officer (BCMO), where career progression, personal development, and promotion were discussed, along with developing a full understanding of the annual reporting process for all Army Reserve Personnel.

The 16th August saw the Band of the Mercian Regiment complete their final rehearsals in preparation for their concert in Hyde Park the next day. Time was taken to add a little polish and flair for the event, which is part of a series of concerts on the famous bandstand, organised by the Friends of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.

And so the next day, The Band of the Mercian Regiment took London by storm in a spectacular performance on Hyde Park’s bandstand, which concluded their Annual Training Exercise.

The skies were blue, with blazing sunshine; it was the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon.

The event, sponsored by the Richardson business, saw a good attendance, with the Honorary Colonel of 4 MERCIAN, Colonel Carl Richardson, as well as the Commanding Officer of 4 MERCIAN, Lt Col Charlie Whitting, in attendance to show their support to the band.
