Mary Dube, an International Relations and Economics undergraduate student at the University of Birmingham, recently completed a summer internship with RCL Partners, the retained adviser to the Richardson family office, during which she undertook a project looking into the future of cryptocurrencies.

We spoke with Mary to hear more about what she took from the experience.

What was the highlight of the internship?

It was great to see the result of my research paper and to talk it through with the investment team. My presentation and the subsequent conversation really brought home the practical benefits of my work.

What was the work you carried out?

During the programme, I worked on a research paper into cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, looking in particular at the regulatory environment, the risks involved and the access points for investors. I then presented my findings to the research team and provided my investment recommendation.

Beyond the conclusion of your degree, what are your wider career plans?

I want to start applying to graduate schemes soon in the finance sector, which this internship has provided invaluable experience for.

Would you recommend the internship?

Yes, definitely. It gives you an idea on how to conduct research beyond university. It shows how research can translate into real life results and I’m looking forward now to taking my experience and utilising it in my final year at university.

Mary went through the programme as part of the professional development module within her International Relations with Economics Degree, and the experience will go on to inform Mary’s final year studies.
