The food bank works out of the George Road Baptist Church and provides emergency food and support to people in crisis.

Since the Coronavirus outbreak the food bank has seen the numbers of people needing their help rise significantly. Numbers have nearly trebled in a matter of weeks, as incomes have reduced and families have the added pressure of children not being fed through schools.

The food bank works closely with different community-based professionals who identify people in crisis and issue them with a food bank voucher. This means people can receive a food bank parcel of three days’ nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.

Jean Moreton, who runs the food bank, said:

“More people than ever have been using our food bank over recent weeks and we expect to have even more referrals over the forthcoming months. These are unprecedented times, with some people who have previously donated to the food bank now needing its support as the Covid-19 outbreak continues to impact on all of our lives.

“We are here to provide help and support for local people in crisis but can only do this through the generosity of others. We have donation points at a number of local supermarkets and many retailers also supply us with food to re-distribute to individuals and families. However, to receive a cash donation from the Richardson family of this value is amazing. It means we can stock up on essential items, like milk, sugar, washing powder and toiletries. The sort of things that we might ordinarily take for granted but that can be in short supply when the going gets tough.”

Martyn Richardson/or another, from the Richardson Brothers Foundation, added:

“We recognise these are tough times and that food banks are providing emergency support for increasing numbers of people during this crisis. We are pleased that, through the foundation, we can donate £3,000 to the George Road Baptist Church food bank to help get food and other essential items to people who are in desperate need.

“We hope that the money will make a positive difference to the increasing numbers of people who need the support and will go some way to helping them through this difficult time.”
