Richardson, Ask Real Estate and Homes England have received planning consent for 245 build-to-rent flats at the long-awaited Tower Works site on Globe Road in Leeds.

The partners have appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as lead contractor on the development and said construction will begin immediately.

The approval comes five years after Carillion signed a deal with Homes England, then the Homes and Communities Agency, to deliver the regeneration.

Carillion sold its stake in Ask in 2017 to the Richardson’s. Plans for Tower Works were approved in 2016 but reworked to boost the number of flats.

Ben Holmes, real estate director at Richardson, said:

“The South Bank area of the city is being totally transformed and is one of the most desirable residential locations in Leeds.”

Tower Works was established in the 1860s as a steel pin factory for the textile industry. Development will retain the three listed towers. Leeds City Council will redevelop the Engine House as a post-production facility following Channel 4’s move to the city.
